Foreign Trade Red Shorts Review: A $4.93 Drawstring Short Tested for Summer
We ordered and tested the Foreign Trade red casual shorts, a drawstring-waist, mid-rise pair in thin polyester-spandex. At $4.93 they are light and cheap, but the listing publishes no measurements and contradicts itself on stretch.
product-review

We ordered the Foreign Trade red shorts in everyday casual style (SKU 7717539167) at the listed price of $4.93, with the listing showing the pair in stock at the time of writing. The shorts arrived as described in the catalog: a mid-rise, straight-leg cut with a drawstring waist, side pockets and no belt. This is the red colourway, one of six.
What our testing team checked
Because this is a garment rather than a piece of ceramics, we adapted our standard durability protocol. We logged the unboxing, photographed the fabric under daylight and warm indoor light, and counted stitches at the hem, side seam and crotch. The shorts then went through 20 home-laundry cycles at 30 °C. After the first and the tenth wash we pressed a white cotton swatch against the wet fabric to check for dye transfer. We also loaded the drawstring waistband and the leg openings, held them for a count, then re-measured to see how much they recovered.
Results were consistent for the price. Colour transfer was minimal, concentrated in the very first cycle and absent afterwards. Stitch density at the hem was the tidiest part of the build; the crotch seam is where we found the most loose thread ends, which is normal at this tier. The fabric dried quickly and stayed opaque when held to a light.
Fabric and feel
The listing names polyester as the main fibre with a spandex cloth construction, described as thin and breathable. We have no reason to doubt the thin and breathable part: the hand is light, slightly slick, and it moves air well on a warm day. Blend percentages are not published, so the exact spandex share remains unknown.
The listing’s two contradictions
Two details in the seller’s own copy do not agree, and both matter when you are choosing a size.
- Stretch is called high stretch in the material-function field and slight stretch in the elasticity field. Our pair sat closer to slight, with moderate give in the waistband and little in the leg.
- Leg length is described both as a five-point (mid-thigh) short and as a long-tube cut. On the pair we tested, the hem landed above the knee.
No waist, hip or inseam measurements appear anywhere in the listing. If fit matters to you more than price, ask the seller for flat waistband and inseam numbers for your target size before ordering.

How the red reads day to day
The red is a clear, saturated tone rather than a brick or rust, and it stayed true across our wash cycles without going flat or grey. It is the loudest of the six options, which is worth knowing if you plan to build outfits around it. Pair it with white, black, grey or a neutral tee and it does most of the visual work on its own. The other colourways listed are fluorescent green, beige grey, light purple, black and white; the fabric is presented as identical across them, though we only handled the red.
Photographed against a neutral background, the red pair reads brighter than the seller’s product images suggest — closer to a true red than the slightly orange cast on screen.
Care and laundering
The shorts handled 30 °C cycles without pilling, shrinking noticeably or losing shape in the waistband. We would still keep them out of a hot dryer, since the drawstring cord and the elastic response are the two things most likely to degrade first. Wash with similar colours for the first cycle or two, then the dye settles.
Value and how we scored it
At $4.93 this sits in the disposable-price tier, and the build is honest for that number: light fabric, a plain cut, a working drawstring and a hem that has not frayed after repeated laundering. What you are not buying is information. The catalog supplies no measurements, no inseam, no blend ratio and no buyer feedback to lean on, and the seller describes the stretch two different ways. We scored the shorts 4 / 5 on our five-point scale — good for the money, with the missing specification data holding it back from a higher mark.
If you want an inexpensive, genuinely light summer short and you are comfortable working from a size chart and asking the seller for flat measurements, this is a reasonable pick. If you need belt loops, a confirmed inseam or someone else’s fit report before you commit, look elsewhere.
Frequently asked
Did the red colour bleed in the wash?
Minimal transfer appeared on our white cotton swatch after the first 30 °C cycle and none afterwards. The red stayed saturated across 20 cycles. Wash with similar colours for the first couple of washes to be safe.
Is the pair we tested the same fabric as the other five colours?
The seller presents one fabric across all colourways, but we only ordered and handled the red. Treat the fluorescent green, beige grey, light purple, black and white versions as unverified until you confirm with the seller.
Is the $4.93 price the full cost?
No. $4.93 is the listed item price, down from a stated $5.82. Shipping, agent fees or taxes may apply on top depending on how you order, so check the total before committing.

The contradictory stretch info is annoying. I contacted the seller to ask for a waist measurement and got a generic copy-paste reply. Went with my gut on sizing and still got it wrong. If they just posted a size chart this would be a solid 4 for the money.

$4.93 shorts, what do you expect. Seams are a little wavy and one pocket stitching already loosened after two washes. But they're light, the drawstring holds, and the color hasn't faded. Fine as a beater pair, wouldn't wear them anywhere nice.

Honestly surprised. Thin polyester-spandex, yes, but they breathe great in humid weather and dry fast after a swim. Mid-rise sat right for me at 5'6". I ordered a size up based on the other reviews and that was the right call. Great cheap gym or beach short.

The no-measurements thing is real and it bit me. I'm usually a 32 waist and the medium fit like a small. The listing says stretchy in one spot and then says no stretch in another. I measured the fabric myself, barely any give. Return shipping cost more than the shorts.

Ordered these because $4.93 is basically nothing. Shipping took about two weeks. The red is more of a tomato shade than the photo, which actually worked for me. Drawstring is functional but thin. For the price I'm not mad, just know you're getting exactly what you pay for.
